The COVID-19 pandemic had a large impact on everyone, particularly children. During this time, Mandy was asked to find a home for two goats in need. These two goats, Colt and Everest, became the catalyst for establishing Tam O'Shanter Farm. Mandy, along her husband, Jamy, prepared the barn on their property and put up new fencing for the herd. Mandy was no stranger to caring for farm animals, raised on a horse farm and currently having a pig named Wilbur living in her house. Before she knew it, Mandy was agreeing to provide a loving home for two more goats, Fiona and Axel, along with a family of rooster and hens.
In Mandy's work with families who face emotional challenges, she was well aware of the impact of the pandemic on families and children. She was observing an increase in mental health symptoms stemming from isolation at home, changes in routines, and the lack of socialization with the outside world. Her clients and families responded well to videos of her herd. Mandy realized that children would benefit even more from making these connections in person than what they were obtaining from virtual connections.
Mandy and Jamy established Tam O'Shanter Farm to create a safe, loving environment for children with mental health and emotional challenges. providing children with the opportunity to build self esteem through connecting with animals and learning life skills about farming.
